Automating a weekly newsletter with Zapier and Perplexity

A research-and-draft pipeline that can save a couple of hours a week, and the two places it still needs a human.

Tools mentioned in this video

7.9/10

Zapier

Connects everything to everything with no code. Task pricing punishes the automations that work best.

8.0/10

Perplexity

Sourced answers fast enough to replace a tab of Google searches. Check the sources before you publish.

8.4/10

ChatGPT

Covers more jobs than any other single subscription. Writers consistently rate its drafts a step behind Claude.

What the video covers

The Zap collects links from a saved folder and an RSS feed, sends them to Perplexity for a sourced summary, and drops a draft into a Google Doc on a set day. Then a person reads it, cuts half of it, and writes the intro.

The automation is not the hard part. The hard part is deciding what counts as newsworthy, and no prompt does that reliably. The video is honest about that.

Zapier's task pricing is the thing to watch. A setup like this uses roughly 200 tasks a month, which sits inside the entry paid plan. Add image generation and it will not.
