Descript review: editing video like a document actually works

What it is

Descript is a video and audio editor built around a transcript. Import a recording, it transcribes it, and from then on you edit the text. Delete a sentence and the footage goes with it. Add a word and its Overdub voice can speak it. A conventional timeline exists too, but the transcript is the point.

It bundles screen recording, AI voices, captions, a stock library and an eye-contact fixer for webcam footage.

What it is used for

Faceless channel assembly is the common pipeline: ElevenLabs audio in, Descript transcribes, B-roll placed against the transcript, captions from a template, export. Podcasters use it for cleanup and show notes. Course creators use it for screen-recorded modules.

Creators who switch from a timeline editor typically describe an eight-minute narrated video dropping from a few hours to around ninety minutes, most of it choosing footage.

Where it stands out

Speed on spoken content. If the video is mostly someone talking, editing by transcript is faster than any timeline. Removing ums, tightening pauses and cutting tangents takes seconds.

Audio repair. Studio Sound turns a laptop-mic recording into something listenable. Not magic, but the difference between "sounds cheap" and "sounds fine", which for a podcast is the whole game.

Captions. Current styles, editable, accurate. For short-form clips this matters more than any other feature.

Where it falls short

Performance. Once a project has a long transcript, several video tracks and layered captions, scrubbing gets choppy and saves slow down. Multi-camera podcasts over about 45 minutes are where users report freezes. It is a web-based app at heart.

Its own AI voices are a step behind. Fine for a rough cut or an explainer nobody scrutinises. When the voice is the product, users import ElevenLabs audio instead.

Sync. After unusually heavy edits, audio and video can drift by a few frames. Re-rendering fixes it, but you have to notice.

Who it suits

Anyone editing spoken video or audio regularly. Faceless channels, podcasters, course creators. Creator at $24 is the plan for weekly publishing.

If the content is mostly visual with little narration, or you edit long multi-cam projects, a traditional editor serves better. For clipping long videos into shorts, Opus Clip pairs well with it.
