Claude review: the writing assistant with the best reputation for prose

What it is

Claude is Anthropic's chat assistant. It writes, edits, summarises and reasons through problems in a browser, in desktop and mobile apps, and it accepts uploaded files. The free tier includes the current model with a message cap. Pro raises the cap and adds Projects, which store instructions and reference documents so every new chat starts with that context.

There is no image generation and no full voice mode. Anyone who wants a single subscription that covers text, images and voice will need to pair it with something else.

What it is used for

Among freelancers and content operators, Claude shows up most often for long-form drafting, editing existing copy, summarising documents and writing scripts. The Projects feature is the reason: a Project per client with a style guide, sample pieces and a banned-phrases list produces drafts that already sound like the client. That setup is a recurring recommendation in writer communities.

The large context window is the other draw. Uploading a long report or a batch of transcripts and asking for themes with quotes is a documented, common use.

Where it stands out

Restraint. In comparisons published by writers, Claude's drafts tend to land nearer the requested length, avoid rhetorical questions in intros, and skip the unrequested summary paragraph that ChatGPT is known for. The gap has narrowed, but the pattern is consistent across many side-by-sides.

Editing. Users report that when asked to tighten a draft without changing the argument, it does that rather than quietly substituting a safer point. That distinction matters more than it sounds for client work.

Instruction following. Telling it not to use a phrase generally works. That saves a pass on every job.

Where it falls short

Usage limits. Pro's cap is generous for short sessions and tight for long ones. Reports of hitting the limit mid-task, with a reset hours away, are the single most common complaint. The Max plans remove the problem at five to ten times the price.

Research. Web search exists and works, but Perplexity is built around citations and shows sources more clearly. Writers who need to cite usually run research separately and hand Claude the notes.

Hedging. Left to its defaults it sometimes wraps a clear answer in qualifications. A line in the Project instructions asking for a direct answer first is the standard fix.

Who it suits

Anyone whose income depends on writing: freelancers, newsletter operators, people running content for clients. Pro at $20 is the plan most of them use.

It is a poor fit for people who mainly need images, voice or one tool for everything. Pairing it with Midjourney or Canva for visuals is the common setup.
